Several months ago I announced a personal project from my own backyard. It has been going well so far. I have observed and photographed 124 mostly plants, animals, and insects since December 26, 2025, identifying 96 species.
View my profile on iNaturalist to see more. I succeeded at finding something new every day for a while, but recently had a series of repeats. The tiny stretch of nature I explore has a sizable, but not unlimited variety of organisms.
I hope to continue the search through 2026 or until I run out of subjects. There are species in the Biodiversity of Guam project I still hope to find. A few I’ve already captured deserve better portraits, but being fast is often more important than being creative when pursing tiny things that move.
The old equipment I’ve used for most of the project is performing beautifully. My Minolta 100mm macro lens was manufactured between 1985 and 1993. It hasn’t let me down yet, even when auto-focusing in relatively low light!
